LAURA HENSER CITY PORTRAITS SOUTHAMPTON

Laura Hensser: City Portraits - 16 July until October 2010 - Guildhall Square, Southampton

16 July sees the launch of City Portraits, a major new public artwork organised in association with John Hansard Gallery,

artist Laura Hensser and Paul Sweetman, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, University of Southampton.

Twenty of Southampton's residents agreed to be photographed for a series of full-length, life-sized portraits, which will be installed on banners in and
around the newly refurbished Guildhall Square. These minimal images will portray each participant suspended within the ceaseless activity of the busy
street, secluded within their own space.

The portraits will celebrate the lives of each individual as well as representing the diversity of the city's population.

City Portraits will be the first in a series of events welcoming people into Southampton's new Cultural Quarter.

The artwork is underpinned by Paul Sweetman's research with City Portraits participants exploring the experience and possibilities of representation and
recognition, and issues of ethics and anonymity in sociological research.

City Portraits forms part of the Creative Campus Initiative, a consortium of South East Universities working together in support of the Cultural Olympiad.

Laura Hensser is a Southampton-based artist. In 2009 she was awarded the ARC Award at Aspex

Gallery, Portsmouth and was a recent participant on the NES artist residency program in Iceland.

Creative Campus Initiative is recognised by the London 2012 Inspire programme.

PUBLIC ART COMMISSION - YATE

Liv Stevens has passed on this opportunity - closing date is 20 July so you only have a couple of weeks to respond.

Public Art Commission: Yate Youth Café

Artists are invited to submit ideas for the public art programme for the new Youth Café  for Young People in Yate,  South Gloucestershire.

Proposals are sought which respond to three main areas identified:

·          the outside front  wall(s) of the building and possibly the front entrance.
·          the external lighting scheme
·          options to enhance the windows, eg: Transparencies or stained glass

Artists are free to either respond to one or more of the above or develop an artistic approach which incorporates all elements. The artist's research process for each site should look to engage with the qualities and use of the space and respond accordingly.

It is of utmost importance that proposals consider how best to engage and interact with all users of the youth centre and the wider community.  Artists should consider how the work will interest, challenge and relate to both the main clientele of the building (13-19 year-olds) and the wider community to form an appropriate gateway to the town centre.

The artist will be required to deliver workshop or educational/consultation events to engage young people and the wider community. Artists must be prepared to mentor other artists should they be required.

Total Budget: £ 66,700

For a copy of the full brief, email info@artpointtrust.org.uk

Closing date for applications: 20 July 2010
